Active School Committee

This is our Active School Committee for 2017. The committee has lots of important jobs and it is made of one representative from each class. Here is a list of the roles each member plays:

Daire Playground Leader
Jack Minding Resources
Emily Checking roster for structured games
Jack & Ciara Reporting to their class
Bree Playground Leader
Dwaine Reporting information back to his class
Mark Helping organise teams
Zach Playground Leader

The AS committee are responsible for the structured games which occur at lunch time every day between Monday and Thursday. We have also liaised with the Health Promotion Officer and Healthy Eating Schools Promotion committee in our school, becoming aware of the importance of a healthy and balanced diet along with an active lifestyle. All children have received a Super-Trooper activity pack where they are encouraged to take part in physical activities every day at home and record it in their activity tracker. They have also created a notice board and suggestion box which helps to keep the whole school informed about their work, as well as the sporting achievements of our talented students and staff.

Celebrating our Extra-curricular Achievements

The senior members of the ASC also conducted a survey entitled “What Club Are You In?” which gave us an insight into all of the many physical activities happening in our local community. We found that students are membes of the following clubs:

Pallas GAA Scarteen Pony Club
Doon GAA Limerick Judo Academy
Kilteely/ Dromkeen GAA Emly Tennis Club
Pallas Soccer Club Bruff RFC
Lattin/ Cullen AFC Limerick Dance Academy

In addition to this survey the ASC asked students and staff to discuss how they stay active outside school and to bring in photos of themselves engaging in physical activity after school. Take a look!

G.A.A.

Barna N.S. has a longstanding relationship with the G.A.A. especially the local club, Pallasgreen. The club has presented Barna N.S. with sliotars and a plaque to commemorate the new opening of the school.

In addition to this Ollie Coffey, our local GDA, comes to the school to coach our students in Gaelic football and hurling/camogie. All the students really enjoy the coaching they receive from Ollie and always look forward to his next visit.

Parents

Recently our Football team won the Football Final in Croke Park. We were all delighted with the result and would like to take the time to thank our fantastic parent volunteers who ensured that all of the team members had all of their gear, gave lifts to and from matches and also supported the team from the sidelines.

The Active School Committee would also like to extend a special you to Tom for helping to create the playground markings, which the students are really enjoying!

Surveys

The Active School Committee has decided to undertake a survey of both parents and students in order to gain a better understanding of attitudes towards P.E. and physical activity within the school. Here are the results:

We also found out that the children in our school involved in loads of extra-curricular activities such as, Hurling, Football, Soccer, Rugby, Dancing, Athletics, Gymnastics, Kickboxing, Running, Golf, Horse-riding and Swimming.

Parent Surveys

We also received a huge response from our parents and we found that 90% of parents believe that the children in Barna N.S. receive a varied P.E. programme and overall parents are very happy with the physical activity offered in the school.

However, the survey did reveal that parents are eager to get more information about P.E. in the school. Therefore the Active School Committee has decided to release a newsletter with all our important physical activity news to make sure that our parents are kept up to date!
