Physical Activity

Busy Breaks

We believe that staying active throughout the day helps us to concentrate and work better in class. Just look at our School Slogan:

We take part in lots of Busy Breaks throughout the day such as Go Noodle and Ten at Ten.

Fruit Breaks

We try to eat healthy in Barna N.S. and enjoy a ten minute fruit break every day. Recently, the students in Barna N.S. decided to replace the idea of bringing a sweet treat on a Friday with an extra activity break instead. This means that the students are eating healthier and getting more exercise. Well Done everybody!

Lunchtime – Busy Breaks

Children in Barna N.S. get two breaks a day to get out and get active! The yard is split into two zones, one for Junior pupils and one for Senior pupils. All children are encouraged to run and travel freely around the yard at small break.

The older children from the Active School Committee lead structured games at lunch time from Monday to Thursday. This gives every a different sport each day and also enjoy “Free Play Friday” where they can then play any sport they wish!

Lining Up

We are trying to get more active in everything we do! The Active School Committee has decided to make sure that we are active even when we are lining up to come in after break. We lunge, squat, run and dance while we wait to come back inside!

Bad Weather

Sometimes, it is not possible to go outside at break-time, due to bad weather. However, the students and staff at Barna N.S. still manage to stay active using Go Noodle and Just Dance activities.

Initiatives 2017/2018

Running Initiative 2017

The Active School Committee launched their Running Initiative last year.

The pupils of Barna NS decided to run from Thomand Park Limerick to Croke Park Dublin! That’s a distance of 221km!!

It was a whole school running challenge and every pupil worked together to add up all their kilometres to run from Limerick to Dublin.

Over 6 weeks the pupils of Barna NS ran at every opportunity and added their distances together to complete their running challenge! Congratulations Barna!

Running Initiative 2018

Last year we ran all the way across Ireland. This year we have decided to conquer Europe!

When our teachers say “D.E.A.R” We do just that-  Drop Everything And Run! We are running laps of our playground and one lap is equal to one kilometer. Our aim is to reach all the capital cities in Europe including; London, Paris, Brussels and loads more!

Before we run we always remember to stretch and warm up our bodies. During our run we remember to take our time and breathe in through our noses and after our run we give ourselves a big pat on the back!

Every day before D.E.A.R. we are reminded that it is not a race or a competition and that we are all trying our best. Our running is improving each day which means that we always try to beat the amount of laps we did the day before! Running gives us more energy and it allows us to concentrate better throughout the day.
