Healthy Eating Letter 2018

Dear parents,

As you are aware, we are part of the Health Promoting Schools initiative and are working towards getting a HPS flag for our school.

This letter will highlight the hard work done by parents, students and teachers to date.

So far ……

  • We have introduced a daily fruit break at 10 am
  • We completed a drink sugar project and educated the children on sugar consumption and choosing healthy drink options.
  • The children took a vote and decided to replace treat day on Friday with an extra ten minute outdoor break.
  • The children take part in meditation on a Wednesday
  • At the beginning of the year the children spoke about feelings and we made up mindfulness jars to show how our minds get busy during the day. The children were shown breathing exercises to help them calm and to deal better with a busy day.
  • Structured games, brain breaks, drop everything and run in partnership with Active School Initiative.

Coming up …..

  • Looking at breakfast cereals and choosing the best option to have a healthy start to your day.
  • Taste testing – fruit & vegetables: melon, pineapple, mixture of berries, peppers, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, sweet corn
  • Mindfulness exercises

Thank you for your continued support and help.

What you can do to continue to help us and your child …

  • Continue to send in prepared fruit or vegetables for your child’s morning fruit break.
  • If your child has stopped or has never brought in a fruit break, try to encourage them to bring a small portion of fruit or vegetables in a separate container for the last term.
  • Continue to provide your child with healthy balanced lunch, minimising items with refined sugar. (see booklet for healthy ideas and options).

Options for Fruit Break:

  • Mandarin oranges
  • Apples sliced
  • Berries /grapes
  • Portion of tinned fruit
    (in own juice)
  • Banana
  • Melon /kiwi/mango
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Sliced peppers
  • Cucumber
  • Sweet corn
  • Carrots (cooked or raw)
  • Cooked beetroot

Please note that this break is only five minutes long so keep bigger pieces of fruit until your child’s main break. Apple slices soaked in lemon juice will help them to keep their colour until ten o clock.

Thanking you for your continued support and help,

Denise Fletcher
